Photocrosslinked Dextran-Based Hydrogels as Carrier System for the Cells and Cytokines Induce Bone Regeneration in Critical Size Defects in Mice
2018
Modified biomaterials have for years been the focus of research into establishing new bone substitutes. In our preceding in vitro study employing different cell cultures, we developed chemically and mechanically characterized hydrogels based on photocrosslinkable dextran derivatives and demonstrated their cytocompatibility and their beneficial effects on the proliferation of osteoblasts and endothelial cells. In the present in vivo study, we investigate photocrosslinked dextran-based hydrogels in critical size defects in mice to evaluate their potential as carrier systems for cells or for a specific angiogenesis enhancing cytokine to induce bone formation. We could demonstrate that, with op…
Hair Mercury Levels Detection in Fishermen from Sicily (Italy) by ICP-MS Method after Microwave-Assisted Digestion
2015
A number of ninety-six hair samples from Sicilian fishermen were examined for total mercury detection by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. The mercury levels obtained were compared with mercury levels of 96 hair samples from a control group, in order to assess potential exposure to heavy metals of Sicilian fishermen due to fish consumption and closeness to industrial activities. Furthermore, the mercury levels obtained from hair samples were sorted by sampling area in order to verify the possible risks linked to the different locations. The overall mean concentration in the hair of the population of fishermen was6.45±7.03 μg g−1, with a highest value in a fish…
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and Copolymers: A Review on Recent Progresses in Biomedical Applications.
2017
The innate ability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) thermo-responsive hydrogel to copolymerize and to graft synthetic polymers and biomolecules, in conjunction with the highly controlled methods of radical polymerization which are now available, have expedited the widespread number of papers published in the last decade—especially in the biomedical field. Therefore, PNIPAAm-based hydrogels are extensively investigated for applications on the controlled delivery of active molecules, in self-healing materials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, or in the smart encapsulation of cells. The most promising polymers for biodegradability enhancement of PNIPAAm hydrogels are probably…
NHC-Based Iron Sensitizers for DSSCs
2018
International audience; Nanostructured dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are promising photovoltaic devices because of their low cost and transparency. Ruthenium polypyridine complexes have long been considered as lead sensitizers for DSSCs, allowing them to reach up to 11% conversion efficiency. However, ruthenium suffers from serious drawbacks potentially limiting its widespread applicability, mainly related to its potential toxicity and scarcity. This has motivated continuous research efforts to develop valuable alternatives from cheap earth-abundant metals, and among them, iron is particularly attractive. Making iron complexes applicable in DSSCs is highly challenging due to an ultrafa…
Dimethyl 2,2′-[Carbonylbis(azanediyl)](2S,2′S)-bis[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoate]
2018
The thus‐far unknown ureic derivative dimethyl 2,2′‐[carbonylbis(azanediyl)](2S,2′S)‐ bis[3‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)propanoate] has been efficiently synthesized by enantiospecific oxidative carbonylation of readily available L‐tyrosine methyl ester, using a very simple catalytic system (PdI2 in conjunction with KI) under relatively mild conditions (100 °C for 5 h in DME as the solvent and under 20 atm of a 4:1 mixture CO‐air).
Caffeine as a Gelator
2016
Caffeine (a stimulant) and ethanol (a depressant) may have opposite effects in our body, but under in vitro conditions they can “gel” together. Caffeine, being one of the widely used stimulants, continued to surprise the scientific community with its unprecedented biological, medicinal and physicochemical properties. Here, we disclose the supramolecular self-assembly of anhydrous caffeine in a series of alcoholic and aromatic solvents, rendering a highly entangled microcrystalline network facilitating the encapsulation of the solvents as illustrated using direct imaging, microscopy analysis and NMR studies. SALMO and S3M: A Saliva Model and a Single Saliva Salt Model for Equilibrium Studies.
2014
A model of synthetic saliva (SALMO, SALiva MOdel) is proposed for its use as standard medium inin vitroequilibrium and speciation studies of real saliva. The concentrations come out from the literature analysis of the composition of both real saliva and synthetic saliva. The chief interactions of main inorganic components of saliva, as well as urea and amino acids, are taken into account on the basis of a complex formation model, which also considers the dependence of the stability constants of these species on ionic strength and temperature. These last features allow the modelling of the speciation of saliva in different physiological conditions deriving from processes like dilution, pH, a…
Activation of the Cyano Group at Imidazole via Copper Stimulated Alcoholysis
2019
Reactions of 4,5-dicyano-1-methylimidazole with CuX2 (X = Cl, Br) in alcohol solvents (ethanol and methanol) resulted in the formation of Cu(II) carboximidate complexes [CuCl2(5- cyano-4-C(OEt)N-1-methylimidazole)(EtOH)] (1), [Cu2(µ
Organic derivatives of mercury and tin as promoters of membrane lipid peroxidation.
2008
The toxicity mechanisms of mercury and tin organic derivatives are still under debate. Generally the presence of organic moieties in their molecules makes these compounds lipophilic and membrane active species. The recent results suggest that Hg and Sn compounds deplete HS-groups in proteins, glutathione and glutathione-dependent enzymatic systems; this process also results in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the enhancement of membrane lipids peroxidation and damage of the antioxidative defence system. The goal of this review is to present recent results in the studies oriented towards the role of organomercury and organotin compounds in the xenobiotic-mediated enhancement …
Dimethyl 2-(1-methyl-3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-1-yl)malonate
2020
In this work we report a facile access to a 3,3-disubstituted isobenzofuranone by tandem addition/cyclization reaction to methyl 2-acetylbenzoate in the presence of dimethyl malonate, under basic conditions.
